Netflix Rolls Out New Features to Help You Find New Content

With COVID-19 still going on, it’s not impossible to watch every movie or TV show on Netflix. We can’t go outside anyway, so we might as well watch TV all day. So, Netflix wants to make finding new content easier for subscribers. The streaming site will roll out a new feature that groups all new content in one place.

Netflix plans to roll out the new feature after April tests. However, only TV devices can use it.

Netflix’s New & Popular

The Verge reports that Netflix plans to call this new group “New & Popular.” Under this group, all the new content from the New on Netflix, the Top 10, and Coming Soon rows will sit together.

Moreover, Netflix plans to add another new row called “Worth the Wait.” Under this section, you’ll receive previews of shows coming to the service in the next 15 or 365 days.

Netflix’s Worth the Wait

Netflix also believes that the “Worth the Wait” row could be popular with subscribers. With the new row, you can now remind yourself to watch upcoming shows that might have interested you. The expectation of watching a new show in the future might keep subscribers from leaving Netflix.

What’s Next for Netflix

In the last quarter, Netflix has added 10 million subscribers. However, it’s had trouble retaining subscribers. In 2019, Netflix even lost subscribers for the first time. Moreover, a crop of new streaming sites might steal their customer base.

These new features might keep subscribers with Netflix for now, but only new and original content could keep them excited in the long-term.

Make Sure Your Mac Has the T2 Chip Before Watching Netflix on 4K

If you want to watch 4K HDR Netflix on your old Mac, you might think twice before moving to macOS Big Sur. While the new macOS supports 4K HDR, you can only watch it on Macs with the T2 security chip.

Apple’s T2 Chip and Netflix

According to a Netflix support document, only Macs released in 2018 or later supports 4K Netflix. To check if your Mac fits the bill, look at The Verge’s list of compatible models:

  •     iMac (2020)
  •     iMac Pro
  •     Mac Pro (2019)
  •     Mac mini (2018)
  •     MacBook Air (2018 or later)
  •     MacBook Pro (2018 or later)

You can also check on Apple’s website if your Mac has the T2 security chip. Sadly, even if your pre-2018 Mac could support 4K in theory, the T2 chip’s absence makes it impossible.

Why Do Macs Need the T2 Chip?

The Verge guesses that Macs need the T2 chip because it works as a co-processor. According to Apple, the chip’s video processing power also supports the HEVC video codec. The company also adds that the T2 chip doubles the speed of transcoding HEVC video, compared to previous Macs.

How Do I Watch 4K Netflix on My Mac?

Before watching 4K Netflix on your new Mac, you also need to get Netflix’s Premium plan for $15.99 a month. Even then, you could only watch 4K Netflix on Safari. It wouldn’t work on other browsers.

Moreover, even Windows has strict requirements for watching 4K Netflix. You need to be on Windows 10. Also, they could only watch 4K Netflix on Microsoft Edge or the Netflix app. Moreover, you would need a 4K display and a machine with a powerful CPU or GPU.

Netflix Says Sorry for ‘Inappropriate’ Artwork of Criticized Film

Netflix released an apology over a movie petitioned for removal from the platform. The film’s promotional artwork received backlash for being “inappropriate.”

‘Inappropriate Image’

On August 20, the streaming giant issued an apology over a promotional poster and caption for the upcoming award-winning film slated to debut on the platform. Netflix renamed the French movie “Cuties.” Originally titled “Mignonnes,” the film tells the story of an 11-year old.  The main character went against her family’s traditional view to join a dance crew.

Netflix’s original image for the film shows the four young girls in their dancing outfits striking different poses.

Through Twitter, the company responded: “We’re deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Mignonnes/Cuties. It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film, which won Sundance. We’ve now updated the pictures and description.”

The updated description now reads: “Eleven-year-old Amy starts to rebel against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.”

Netflix Online Petition

But not only the poster received scrutiny from people. An online petition initiated wants Netflix to remove the movie. The streaming giant did not announce any removal of the film.

According to the Change.org petition, which as of August 21, has over 127,000 signatures, the film “sexualizes” a young girl. Moreover, it accused the movie of being geared for “pedophiles.”

USA Today also reported the Parents Television Council’s stance, which is requesting Netflix not to pursue the release of “Cuties.” The conservative body advises which broadcast materials are harmful to the children.

Its president, Tim Winter, said: “Netflix must stop sexually exploiting children for the sake of entertainment, period. It’s time for Netflix to account for the content it hosts.”

Winter also suggested that Netflix’s first step should be to remove “Cuties” and other programming “that sexualizes children.” Examples include titles ‘Sex Education’ and ‘Big Mouth.’

The Film

The French flick “Mignonnes” received the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award from Sundance Film Festival this year. Moreover, Deadline said that the critics acclaimed the film for how it approached sensitive topics. It also gathered an 82 percent rating in Rotten Tomatoes.

Film director Maïmouna Doucouré explained to Cineuropa the intent of the film. For her, the story’s purpose is to show how social media platforms influence girls to imitate sexy images and not understand its dangerous implications. She also noted the importance of talking about this kind of topic.

If your dinner routine includes watching TV, and you own a Google Nest Hub, this news is for you. Google has announced that its Nest Hub device will  finally support Netflix. People who use the Nest Hub for quick and easy recipes will now find it the perfect cooking companion.

How Do I Watch Netflix on My Google Nest Hub?

In a blog post, Google said that you need to be a Netflix subscriber to access the app. Once there, just link your account using your Google Home app, and get your “Netflix fix” right away. Linking your account also gives you voice control over Netflix. Use either voice commands or the touchscreen to browse and watch your favorite shows. Voice command should be helpful if you want to watch while cooking.

Can I Do Anything Else with Netflix on My Nest Hub?

Gizmodo reports that you can also make hands-free gestures to control the Nest Hub. Just look at your Nest Hub’s camera and raise your hand to pause shows. Then, look at it again and lower your hand to resume.

Are There Other Streaming Apps on the Nest Hub?

The Google Nest Hub also offers a lot of streaming platforms aside from Netflix. You can access Disney+, HBO Max, CBS All Access, and Hulu, among “thousands of other apps.”

Gizmodo adds that it is unclear why Netflix arrived this late to the Google Nest Hub. With Netflix on the Nest Hub, you can skip all the awkward dinner conversations and bond over the latest Queer Eye instead.

Despite COVID-19 forcing everyone home, Netflix’s stock tumbled more than 10% Thursday. This number comes after projections that the company could draw in just 2.5 million subscribers in the next quarter. However, in the second quarter of 2020, Netflix had reeled in 10 million subscribers.

Netflix Promotes Ted Sarandos

Aside from this news, Netflix said they were promoting Ted Sarandos to co-CEO, together with Reed Hastings. Sarandos is Netflix’s chief of content. In a statement, Hastings welcomed the news. “Ted has been my partner for decades,” he said. He added that the two of them were already leading the company together informally. This promotion just formalizes the partnership.

Sarandos will still be the content chief. In a blog post, Sarandos said he promises to keep doing what has made Netflix successful. He plans to “keep pushing the boundaries” for “people who love stories.”

Netflix’s Strong Second Quarter

Netflix had a strong second quarter. The company reported profits of $720 million, a long jump from $271 million in the prior quarter. Altogether, Netflix made a profit of $6.1 billion, a 24% increase. However, the company expects growth to slow down due to COVID-19. Consumers still have to get used to COVID-19 restrictions before subscribing

Netflix’s Competitors in the Streaming Market

In addition to COVID-19, Netflix also faces stiff competition. WarnerMedia recently launched HBO Max, another streaming app. Other competitors include Disney+, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, and Hulu.

Netflix plans to resume production of its original content safely. They said they would stick to their original plans for 2020. Worrying about competitors is also far from their minds. “We continue to stick to our strategy,” Netflix said Thursday. To stay ahead, they would “improve their service and content” quicker than their rivals.
