With the virus still at large, many Hollywood studios decided to delay their shows or movies, due to many factors, such as falling behind due to shutdown of cinemas. However, even those that are set to premiere on streaming services are affected as well, due to filming schedule constraints. Take a look at Disney and how it is succumbing to postponing premieres of their streaming content.
One of the main selling points of Disney Plus when they were first introduced last year was its roster of exclusive Marvel shows to come to the streaming service. But apparently they are still yet to deliver them to the eagerly waiting fans, and to worsen matters, a further delay is announced.
Although to be fair, the House of Mouse is updating its service every now and then with content from past Marvel box offices (although sadly the Tom Holland-lead Spider-Mans are yet to be seen, or a huge chance of being added never at all, in their site). This includes the Iron Man movies and Avengers movies, like the highest grossing film of all time: “Avengers: Endgame.” Furthermore, future Marvel movies (or other Disney-owned family-friendly films) are expected to launch on Disney Plus shortly after hitting home digital release.
But among the most anticipated by Disney Plus users are the promised Marvel shows to be released exclusively on the streaming service. And one of its premier shows to officially begin the small screen lineup of the cinematic universe, “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” is now behind schedule. The Verge confirmed that the production has been on hiatus last May due to the pandemic. Its original debut date for the Disney Plus was August, and now it was officially postponed with no date so far. Furthermore, another Disney Plus-exclusive Marvel series “WandaVision,” which was supposed to be released this year, has now been postponed until 2021, Forbes reported.
These delays in Disney Plus exclusives are also paralleled by pushbacks on theatrical releases of major motion pictures from Disney itself, such as Mulan’s live action feature. Also supposed to be delayed are those from Marvel, which are supposed to be part of the cinematic universe’s Phase Four, including Black Widow and The Eternals.

The entertainment giant, who recently gobbled up one of the biggest players in Hollywood, is retiring one of the more iconic names in TV.
On Monday, the Disney company had revealed that it is renaming one of the studios it absorbed from their acquisition of Rupert Murdoch’s entertainment empire Fox. The TV arm, popularly known as “20th Century Fox Television,” is being rebranded into “20th Television,” apparently dropping “Century” and “Fox.”
The title card with the studio name and spotlights that is known to pop at the end of a Fox TV episode, which is somehow similar to its film counterpart’s opening logo, would still remain. Except for the eliminated words. Starting this fall, the updated title card will be included on new episodes produced by 20th Television. Meanwhile, those shows prior to the move, will remain unchanged.

It is not the first time the House of Mouse has tinkered with the labels of studios that were integrated to the company. Earlier this year, Disney also discarded the term “Fox” from one of the oldest movie production houses. The “20th Century Fox Film Corp.,” a name derived in 1935 from the amalgamation of two studios “Fox Film Corp.,” and “Twentieth Century Pictures,” was then rebranded by Disney into “20th Century Studios.” Even maker of indie films Fox Searchlight Pictures also saw a dropping of “Fox.”
The studio giant also intends renaming other TV units under its helm. Among their rebranding efforts would be updating ABC Studios to “ABC Signature Studios.” Another previously-Murdoch owned studio called Fox21 Television Studios will be renamed “Touchstone Television.”
“Our new studio names and logos mark a new day for ABC Signature, 20th Television, and Touchstone Television, while honoring their rich histories and the creative power of The Walt Disney Company,” Disney television studios head Craig Hunegs stated.
The film and TV arms of Fox were absorbed by Disney through its multi-billion dollar deal with Murdoch. All of the entertainment properties under the Fox umbrella, including studio houses like animation company Blue Sky, and licensed characters from Marvel, are now part of the Disney conglomerate. Not included in the $71 billion-deal with Fox was its news arm, including Fox Sports and Fox News. This could likely be why Disney wants to drop the “Fox” labels, to not associate their entertainment studios with the Fox Corporation, the news company.

Quibi has launched a free version in New Zealand and Australia. At the same time, it’s also reducing subscription prices from AUD 13 to AUD 7 for users in those two countries. Those prices are roughly USD 9 and USD 5, respectively. New streaming app Quibi continues struggling to keep itself afloat. Hoping to attract more users,
Engadget reports that Quibi had emailed the announcements to subscribers in New Zealand and Australia. Interested users can pick which option they want, and then convince their family and friends to join Quibi.
Before this move, Quibi had tried to attract more users by uploading its content to YouTube. While the app brands itself as a mobile streaming service, Quibi has also allowed users to cast its shows on their TVs.

Despite receiving $1.8 billion from investors, Quibi has not reached the heights its founders were expecting. A couple of Quibi shows did earn Emmy nods, but the app still cannot hold a candle to other streaming apps, like Disney+. At least Disney+ has hit shows like The Mandalorian.
Even without a show like The Mandalorian, Quibi is more expensive than Disney+, at a rate of $8 a month. Apple TV+ has the same subscription price, but it can boast hit shows like The Morning Show.
COVID-19 has also funneled potential Quibi subscribers toward traditional streamers like Netflix. With content tailored for on-the-go mobile viewing, Quibi failed to entice viewers who want to sit on the couch and binge TV episodes.
The bright side for Quibi is that it has enough cash left to make drastic moves like giving the app away for free or selling it at garage sale prices.

The coronavirus has caused Disney to rethink their calendars once again, delaying anticipated major motion pictures slated until 2027. The studio also removed a release date for “Mulan.”
Two giant franchises are affected by the push back of schedules namely “Star Wars” and Disney’s new property from its Fox acquisition “Avatar.” The House of Mouse announced on Thursday that the scheduled premieres from 2021 to 2027 of installments from these two popular franchises are officially set back by one year. The awaited Avatar sequel will have to wait until 2022, while a new Star Wars movie is now supposed to be shown on 2023.
Meanwhile, one of Disney’s major movies for this year, the live action “Mulan,” is delayed once more. This time, no new date is revealed. It is actually the third delay for Mulan, which had an original release date of March 27. The entertainment giant then moved it to a July premiere, and then for August 21 before finally giving up on setting up a date.

As per a spokesperson for the Walt Disney Studios, “Over the last few months, it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today means pausing our release plans for ‘Mulan’ as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world.”
News of this rescheduling from Disney came as one of its competitors, Warner Bros., also postponed Christopher Nolan-directed spy flick “Tenet” several days prior Disney’s announcement. According to chairman of Warner Bros. Toby Emmerich, “Unfortunately, the pandemic continues to proliferate, causing us to reevaluate our release dates.”
James Cameron meanwhile expressed his disappointment by the delay of “Avatar 2” (originally intended for a December 21 release date). In a statement posted on Twitter, he wrote: “What most of you likely do not know is that the pandemic is still preventing us from being allowed to recommence most of our virtual production work on stages in Los Angeles.”

Notably, there are other films that went to a digital release, giving up the original intended theatrical release, such as the filmed version of Broadway musical hit “Hamilton” and sci-fi movie “Artemis Fowl.” However, “Mulan” is not something Disney would put to streaming without attempting theatrical release. According to The Verge, the live-action adaptation has a chance of making it big at the box office, which could be a blow to the company if they instead put it on streaming. The same goes for “Tenet,” which Warner Bros. would least likely put at the company’s HBO Max directly. Plus, productions of these films are also given high budgets.
